You will learn about international incentives and other supports available to developing startups and small businesses across the globe. Our focus will extend beyond Cleveland to selected markets around the world, including Greece, Vietnam, Tunisia, Argentina, Rwanda and China. You will hear from business people still in the process of developing their companies as well as those whose ventures have flourished. You will learn how these entrepreneurs discovered and procured resources from various programs and intermediary organizations. This course includes case studies and first-person testimonials from entrepreneurs who have launched products and services ranging from medical devices to LED lights to whiskey. Government policymakers and donors typically seek quicker returns on their support programs, which makes long-term support for entrepreneurship challenging. A dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem takes many years, even decades, to develop. The region has made progress, but it remains to be seen whether it has struck upon an enduring formula. In that time, Northeast Ohio has promoted regional development (including job creation and follow-on funding) through alternative methods of financing startups. Northeast Ohio has seen a massive infusion of government and donor resources for over ten years. During our time together in this course, we will explore some of these creative approaches to promoting regional entrepreneurship. Northeast Ohio (where Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University are located) has become a laboratory for such innovative solutions. In transitioning markets that lack abundant private sector financing, creative approaches from government officials, donors, and business leaders can fill the void to support entrepreneurial activity. That doesn't mean they can't nurture and sustain new businesses. These markets are unlike Silicon Valley, and they will likely remain so. "That's not an environment that, generally speaking, going to be conducive for interns to be successful in - They require more hand-holding and active mentoring, and will end up impacting the organization in a less significantly positive way than the other employees.Entrepreneurs fostering new ventures outside of well-developed entrepreneurial ecosystems like Silicon Valley face significant challenges. For this, you need to have a great degree of context as to what's important to us, and some experience to know how to use that context. "Netflix's internal culture (see Culture) is built to optimize speed of innovation by making decision-making as decentralized and distributed in the organization as possible that means we expect decisions to be made at the absolutely lowest possible level of the organization, and our engineers are, to a great degree, expected to operate in a self-directed way. Netflix is able to compete for senior level developers against other valley companies so there's no need to create awareness among early-career engineers, to create a career pipeline for training engineers/managers, or create a more positive image among college students entering the market. "Since Netflix does not employ new graduates or junior developers, it negates many of the reasons to hire interns. Those interns can be thought of as the beginning of a 'pipeline' that eventually produces senior engineers and managers. "Internships are also a recruiting strategy to increase the pool of qualified college graduates or gain access to university researchers. Usually, internships are part of a company's career development strategy, whether formal or informal. Employees are expected to choose their own path and take ownership of their own career development - the company won't do it for you. Employees do not start from a 'bottom' and are guided towards particular paths. "There is also no formal career development or structured ladder at Netflix. There are exceptions for exceptionally skilled candidates or someone with a very rare skill. "Netflix generally does not hire interns, recent college graduates, or junior level developers.
